Welcome to Old Pilkington Airfield, and my hobby website. OPA is a radio controlled aircraft flying site adjacent to my house, located in the foothills above Santa Cruz. The field is approximately 4 miles from Pacific Avenue in downtown SC. Only quiet, electric aircraft are flown here. The current active takeoff runway is approximately 45’ (improved) and the landing option is on an unimproved strip of approximately 120’ x 15’. The use of this site requires excellent flying skills, especially in the approach /landing phase of flight.
Future plans include the development of an improved runway to replace the existing unimproved strip. This will include the widening of the runway area as well as providing an "over-run" grass area for long arrivals. Due to the nature of the site, large aircraft ("60 span or larger) will only have one approach option (from the south). Other improvements include the installation of a bench for extended thermal hunting sessions.
